Stink Bugs and Dogs: More Annoying Than Dangerous

As the weather cools, many homeowners notice an increase in stink bugs finding their way indoors. The good news is that stink bugs are not considered toxic or dangerous to dogs. However, that doesn't mean they are completely harmless.
Many dogs are naturally curious and may try to sniff, lick, or even eat a stink bug. When disturbed, stink bugs release a strong-smelling defensive chemical that can irritate your dog's mouth and digestive system. If your dog bites into or swallows a stink bug, you may notice temporary drooling, pawing at the mouth, gagging, or mild stomach upset such as vomiting.
In most cases, symptoms are mild and short-lived. However, dogs that eat multiple stink bugs may experience more significant gastrointestinal discomfort. In rare cases, pieces of the insect's hard exoskeleton could contribute to irritation within the digestive tract.
If your dog eats a stink bug, monitor them closely for signs of persistent vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, loss of appetite, or any unusual behavior. Contact your veterinarian if symptoms are severe or do not improve.
As always, prevention is the best approach. Keeping windows and doors properly sealed and redirecting your dog's attention away from household insects can help avoid unpleasant encounters.
While stink bugs are generally more of a nuisance than a serious threat, they can still make your pup feel uncomfortable for a short period of time. When in doubt, don't hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian for guidance.
