Gentle, Science-Based Dog Training

At Better Together Canine Learning, I focus on kindness and science to help you build a trusting, loving bond with your dog through humane and effective training.

Limited Availibility from October 7th-10th

To continue providing the highest quality training and behavior services, I will be attending the Canis Conference 2026 virtually from October 7-10, 2026. As a result, consultations and private lessons will be available on a limited schedule during these dates.

I will do my best to accommodate both current and prospective clients and my normal availability will return the following week. Thank you for your patience and understanding while I participate in this valuable continuing education opportunity!

Welfare-Focused Training Backed by Science

My training philosophy is rooted in positive reinforcement and fully force‑free, fear‑free methods supported by modern animal behavior science. I follow the LIFE model (least inhibitive, functionally effective) to guide thoughtful, humane decision‑making throughout the training process. I prioritize creating an environment where every dog feels safe, supported, and motivated to learn, building a foundation of lifelong trust and mutual respect between dogs and their owners. To uphold these standards, I do not permit aversive tools, including: shock (e‑) collars, prong collars, choke chains, slip leads used as tightening devices, or any equipment designed to cause discomfort, pain, or fear.

Positive Reinforcement, Negative Punishment,  Management & More

Better Together Canine Learning, LLC believes that dogs learn best when they feel safe, engaged, and successful. My reward-based approach focuses on building skills, confidence, and strong relationships through positive reinforcement and other science-based training methods. Depending on the individual dog, I may use techniques such as shaping, capturing, luring, targeting, differential reinforcement, default behavior training, the Premack Principle, and the 300 Peck Method, among other behavior-based training approaches, to build reliable skills and encourage lasting behavior change. I also help dogs develop positive emotional responses through systematic desensitization and counterconditioning, making challenging situations feel safer and more predictable. When addressing unwanted behaviors, I may use negative punishment by removing access to something the dog values, while ensuring the training environment is set up for success. Management tools such as baby gates, exercise pens, long lines, enrichment activities, and environmental modifications further support learning, safety, and long-term success.

Force-Free & Choice-based Approach

My training is entirely free from force or intimidation to keep dogs comfortable.  I focus on working at the dog's individual pace.
